About 2004 Candidate Matthew Gordon

Matthew ran for State Representative in 2004, seeking to unseat the then 12-year, do-nothing incumbent John Fichter. Though Matthew lost the November 2004 election, he came close enough to prove that Fichter was a weak candidate, despite Fichter's incumbency, large party registration advantage, and financial backing from the Republican party leaders in Philadelphia and Harrisburg, and from the corporate telecommunications and land developer PACs. It is a good bet that the light that Matthew's campaign shined on Fichter was a strong persuader that convinced Fichter to step down in 2006. Matthew's campaign helped persuade the 70th district that We need an active representative, not a do-nothing party placeholder wasting taxpayer money.

This "About" page is leftover from Matthew's 2004 Campaign. It is left up here for sentimental reasons and to encourage other citizens to consider running for the seat, even if they are not plugged in to the local party politicians or have never held political office. We need more citizen legislators. Why not YOU?

"Matthew's environmental background and brownfields redevelopment experience will be a great asset in improving the quality of life and creating new jobs in our community." -State Senator Connie Williams

"Matthew has the right values and the commitment to work hard to represent the interests of the 70th district." -Netta Young Hughes, former candidate and director, Carver Center

"It is my great pleasure to endorse Matthew Gordon in his campaign for the 70th District Seat. From our many conversations, I know that his heart is in the welfare of this region and in the total interest of our great Commonwealth. He stands for all that is good in America. His ideals are of the highest and his motives are pure. If the Pennsylvania Legislature could be filled with people with the ethics and reasoning ability of Matthew Gordon, the Keystone State would be government model to which all the world would aspire. Our District needs Matthew in Harrisburg." -Bill DeAngelis, former Mayor of Norristown; currently with Norristown Preservation Society

Matthew Gordon is a groundwater hydrologist who has been a resident of Skippack since 1995. He has a master's degree in Civil Engineering from MIT, and has been working as an environmental consultant with geologic and engineering firms and government agencies for over 20 years.
He plans to put his extensive experience in project management, environmental impact assessment, and contaminated site cleanup to work for the citizens of the 70th district in revitalizing blighted properties, reducing overdevelopment, protecting open space and parkland, and creating jobs that will improve the local economy.
Matthew's agenda also includes property tax reduction to relieve our seniors and others on fixed incomes of the burden of property tax increases, to more equitably fund our public schools and reduce waste of resources, and to discourage suburban sprawl and urban decay. Matthew believes that public schools must be recognized as the engine of our society, creating economic opportunity, a skilled workforce, and an informed and inventive citizenry. If properly managed and funded, our public school system can improve the well-being of our entire community, and can have a major effect in reducing the aforementioned problems of suburban sprawl and urban decay.
Matthew believes that, while the many fine career politicians bring useful experience and procedural knowledge to Harrisburg, there is a need for citizen legislators to bring fresh perspectives to problem-solving. It's time to elect representatives who have real-world experience to help break the partisan gridlock in Harrisburg, and put the true public interest first, rather than partisan gain and corporate special interests. As part of the Democratic Team for Montgomery County, Matthew looks forward to providing new energy for the 70th District and getting positive things done for the people of his district and throughout Pennsylvania.
Matthew's wife of ten years, Karen, is a cancer research biologist. Together, they have a 9-year-old son, Noah, in public school.
