11/3/06: LAST THOUGHTS BEFORE THE MIDTERM ELECTION:

1. Democrats are kidding themselves to think retaking the House and Senate is a foregone conclusion. It will all depend on turnout. The polls tend to overestimate Democrats because they have a lower turnout rate than Republicans. And it is highly unlikely that Democrats will win every contested seat.

2. Gerlach's relentlessly hate-filled campaign got there first, more often and last. Filled with outrageous lies and distortions, we will once again be witnessing a referendum on whether the public has gotten wise to the Gerlach/Karl Rove approach to misleading and distracting the public. I suspect they haven't, and Gerlach will win through his deceit once again. Murphy is partly to blame for her own slowness to respond, even though they are playing from the exact same playbook as 2004.

3. The Republican State House campaigns are shocked and smarting over Democrats' use of negative campaign mailers. Suddenly, Republicans don't know what to do when they are forced to answer for their own records as tax-raisers, pay-raise voters, and personal tax-evaders. Republicans were blindsided, thinking such techniques were only possible for their own side. It is laughable to hear them complain about "politics of personal destruction" when it is only their own public records they are being called on to explain, not to mention that they themselves invented and mastered the politics of personal destruction.

4. I remain convinced that Republicans engage in organized sign-stealing of serious Democratic opponents. As I pass by corner after corner where all Democratic signs have been removed from their wickets, I remain mystified as to how such thieves and suppressors can call themselves Americans. This is sickening, un-American, even anti-American behavior, of which they should be ashamed.

5. That is the kind of country the Republican party apparatus wish for: One where there is no debate; where there is intimidation and isolation of their opponent; where their opponent isn't even just an opponent- s/he is an Enemy. It is this very approach to politics that has gotten us where we are today- from the time the Republicans took over Congress in 1994 they have left a trail of bitter division, and have protected their own personal interests over the interests of the people. That is what the Republican leadership is all about. And that is exactly why they must be removed from their positions of leadership. Democrats, even when they were in control of Congress and the Presidency, never treated their opponents with such disrespect, and never sought to divide this country so bitterly.

6. I do not want to get my hopes up only to be disappointed by public apathy and Republican gamesmanship, but i sincerely pray that the America I grew up in- Land of the Free, and Home of the Brave- with Liberty and Justice for All- will be restored to a degree on Tuesday. If you agree- please vote.
