OCTOBER 31, 2005: JOHN FICHTER RATED AMONG THE WORST REPRESENTATIVES ON PENNSYLVANIA ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

The independent, non-partisan environmental organization PennEnvironment has released its scorecard of Pennsylvania's legislators based on a review of votes during the 2003-2004 session. John Fichter ranks among the lowest of all the representatives in the House, receiving a grade of 50. In my book, a "50" is an "F". A quick look at a bar chart of the grades of our local Montgomery County representatives swiftly shows who is a friend to the environment (Curry, Leach, Rubley, Harper, Crahalla, and Manderino) and who is an enemy to the environment (Fichter, Cornell, McGill, Godshall, Kenny, and Bunt).
Fichter earned his low rating, as usual, by voting as his corporate sponsors demanded: making sure that huge factory farms can ignore community regulations in handling wastes and sewage; and subsidizing unwanted overdevelopment of greenfields, wetlands and farmland by giving tax breaks and incentives to developers for destruction of open space. Fichter, as usual, puts the interests of his corporate PAC sponsors ahead of the interests of his constituents. The problem here is that once our green space is destroyed through Mr. Fichter's actions, it doesn't come back. Will the voters of the 70th district remember next November?
